Gardening
People in Old North St. Louis love to garden! Take a stroll through the neighborhood and you will notice large, well maintained lots with raised beds full of flowers, whimsical sculptures, yards with formal brick paths and well maintained beds of annuals and perennials, tree boxes full of exotic grasses and bright flowers, window boxes, vegetable gardens and wild flowers everywhere. Operation Brightside Day is one of the biggest events of the year, often bringing out over 100 volunteers who clean alleys and vacant lots and get the gardens ready for each new season. If you have a green thumb or would like to learn more about our gardening and clean-up efforts, contact Jane Smith at the ONSLRG office (241-5031).
Biking
The proximity of Old North St. Louis to the Riverfront Trail has spurred planning for the establishment of a self-guiding bike trail through the neighborhood. Thanks to the efforts of neighborhood residents working in conjunction with students and professors from UMSL, each site on the trail will be marked with a plaque describing some aspect of the neighborhood's history or current life. In addition, there will be a bike shop for children which allows any child in the neighborhood to earn a reconditioned used bike in return for eight hours of community service. For information about the bike tour, call the Restoration Group office at 241-5031.
